Two WhatsApp accounts can live on one phone, and there are two ordinary ways to do it: the app’s built-in multi-account feature on versions that offer it, or the Business app installed alongside the standard one. No modified apps, no workarounds.
Both routes have the same requirement. Each account must be registered to its own phone number that can receive a verification code. That is the part people get stuck on, and it is the reason a spare mobile line exists.
Route one: the built-in multi-account feature
Recent versions of the app let you add a second account from within the app’s own settings and switch between them, in much the same way an email app holds two mailboxes. When it is available, this is the tidiest option: one app icon, one set of notifications to manage, two separate accounts with separate chats.
Where it lives in the menus, and which devices and versions offer it, is entirely up to the app and does change over time. Update to the current version and look in the app’s account settings — if you see an option to add an account, you have it.
Route two: the Business app alongside the main app
The Business app is a separate free download that installs next to the standard app. Because they are two different apps, they can each hold a different account, and that has been the common approach for years — long before multi-account arrived.
It suits anyone whose second number is a work or selling number anyway, since the Business app is built for that. The trade-off is two icons and two lots of notifications.
What to avoid
- Modified or cloned versions of the app. They are not official releases, they break the terms you agreed to, and accounts using them get banned. There is no need — the two routes above are ordinary features.
- Free burner or virtual-number apps. Those numbers are commonly blocked at registration, and they get recycled between users, so a number may already be attached to someone else’s account. See eSIM vs virtual number apps.
- Reusing your own number. One number, one account. There is no setting that lets a single number hold two.
Where the second number comes from
You can put an extra physical SIM in a second phone, if you have a spare handset and want to carry it. Most people would rather not, so the practical answer is a second line on the phone they already use.

Can I use the same number for both accounts?
