To set up a second WhatsApp account you need a second phone number — a real one that can receive a verification code by SMS or a voice call. WhatsApp will not register an account without it, and it will not accept a number that is already signed in to another WhatsApp account.

Why people want a second number
Almost everyone who asks for this is trying to solve the same underlying problem: they want to talk to people without handing over the number their family, bank and doctor use.
- Privacy in general. Once a number is out, it is out. A spare number gives you something to hand over that you can walk away from.
- Selling online. Marketplace listings, local selling groups and classified ads all invite strangers to message you.
- Dating. Moving a conversation off an app usually means swapping numbers. Plenty of people would rather not swap their main one.
- Work and life separation. Clients, shift swaps and group chats stay on one number, and the other one goes quiet at the weekend.
- Side projects and freelancing. A number you can print on a listing, a van, an invoice or a business card.

It has to be a real number
This is where most attempts fall over. Registration works by sending a code to the number you type in, so the number has to actually be able to receive that code. Numbers from free "burner" or virtual-number apps are widely blocked or recycled between users, and a recycled number can mean someone else has already registered it.
A spare eSIM line is a real UK mobile number (07…) on a real network. Calls, texts and verification codes arrive the way they do on your main line. That is the whole point of it.

Scan the QR code

Label the two lines
Your phone will ask which line to use for calls, texts and data. Name them something obvious — "Main" and "Spare" — and leave your existing SIM as the default for everything.

In the app, add an account and enter your new number. The verification code arrives as a text to the spare line. Your first account is untouched.
